Free theory

Free Theory
An approach bringing the form of "free jazz" to theory. A scattered approach to the deconstruction of Canonical theory within academic, social, political practace. Free theory posits that theory is composed of ideas. Ideas are not static or "owned" be anyone. Therefore any idea is open to new meanings and to create "free theory".
Free theory is a practice that has been proposed to be applied to research, performance, and reception of ideas in all media. The first application was used at the State University of New York at Buffalo in the fall of 2007. Media artist d'Olivier used free theory as a rubric to problematize the off-siting of books from Lockwood Graduate library on the Amherst campus of SUNY Buffalo. The practice of "browsing the stacks" to explore the cosmology of the library of congress's LCC cataloging system.
Free theory is an emerging practice that is in process of practice, research, and performance. It is proposed as the future focus of an mfa in the by d'Olivier.
