History
Delavan Lively, a captain during the American Civil War, owned a lot of property around the community, which was known as the town of Chestnut Log. The economy was suffering financially and people could not afford land nor build houses. Captain Lively offered free land to anyone who wanted to build a house. From that point on the community became known as Free Home. During Captain Lively's term as a teacher, the public decided to repay him by building a new school house and naming it Free Home Elementary. In 1906 a larger building was constructed, and in 1919 more classrooms were added, along with a lunchroom. Finally, from 1956 to 57, the main building was completed with brick walls and more classrooms.
