FLxER is a free software based on Adobe Flash technology for realtime visual performances. Users are allowed to mix various video sources and different kind of files (vector, graphics, txt, audio) into a live motion composition. History FLxER was developed in 2001 by Gianluca Del Gobbo from Flyer Communication (web and live video agency based in Rome), supported by his team of developers, creative artists and graphic designers. At the beginning of 2010 was released for free download on the website www.flxer.net, the 5.1 version, enriched by some useful implementations like the 3D engine, the MIDI support and the broadcast video delivery. FLxER is first of all an idea, and, since the beginning, the basic purpose was the creation of a new and specific technology for live video performances, when, thanks to the availability and affordability of new consumer-level technologies, many more people were getting involved into VJing. The software in fact was born in order to give to all the passionates a smart free tool to mix different artistic and multimedia languages and to restitute them in a live video performance. Community The first version of FLxER was released only for private use amongst a group of digital creatives, active in the field of live video performances and deeply involved in the experimental activity of Flyer Communication. The success was unpredictable and enormous and suddenly transformed FLxER into an experimental lab in progress for developers and creatives looking for special tools. FLxER became a virtual community with file sharing hosting, for those who want to share their video creation and join a web-place in which finding answers and resources concerning live video. In April 2003 a new FLxER website was published and new tools were made available to users, such as the possibility to create a personal video library. The community grew up soon and nowadays there are more than 12.000 users. Directly from the success of a web based community so rich in uploaded stuff, born the idea of Vjtelevision, the first 24-hour live video broadcast channel. All contents came directly from the FLxER database and can be seen in daily programming mode and also on demand, jumping in previous or next days or choosing from the 4 main categories: Documentary, Video, Performances and VJ sets. Events and Projects The sense of collective then translated from the virtual world onto physical spaces. This becomes apparent through the ideation of an international yearly meeting, strictly focused on vjing, videoart, live video performances, visual communication and everything is connected and dedicated to these practice. The meeting was named LPM - Live Performers Meeting and, since 2004, is the unmissable appointment for people that want to keep in contact and interact each other in a physical space properly set up for vjing practice. The meeting, usually held in Rome, is in 2010 in its eight edition, including a special edition in Mexico, born directly from an intensive exchange of views and ideas with some of the artists of the numerous vj community active in South America. The numbers of the last edition, at Brancaleone in Rome are: * 15 beamers, 2 led screens, 5 plasma * meters and meters of vga and bnc cables * more than 300 artists from all over the world * 72 hours of projections, performances, showcases, live sets * 177 performances, workshops and showcases * 23 staff members, including media planners * 6.000 people joined the event in four days * 500.000 web contacts Thanks to the expertise and the skills acquired in a decade experience, different projects rise up from the experiences of FLxER and LPM. The most significative are WAM, acronym of Web Art Museum, and Shockart, both focused on the connection between visual art and web technology with the aim of spreading and increasing the value of visual and digital art. Years later Flyer Communication started a new adventure with FLV - Flyer Live Visuals, a spin off of the web agency, totally dedicated to livevisuals activities, offering a wide range of services from artists’ booking, to project, plan and setup every kind of occurrence connected to live video performances.
