Fire alarm pulling is the act of pulling the fire alarm as a prank. The epidemic of fire alarm pulling occurs especially in college dorms. Since this wastes the fire department's time and resources for no reason, as well as initiates a meaningless evacuation of the building, it is often a felony offense. Manual pull stations are sometimes protected by glass which must be smashed to set off the alarm in order to prevent such false alarms. Pull stations are also often protected by covers which if lifted will sound a local alarm that prevents such false fire alarms.
A 17-year-old girl going to Greater Lawrence Technical High School was arrested she pulled the fire alarm at the school. She did it because she was dared to do it by another student. The false fire alarm caused the fire department to show up at the school. She disturbed a school assembly as she pulled the fire alarm when the assembly was going on.
