The fauna of southeast asia is all the animals that live in the region.
Mammals
Primates
Southeast asia is home to several kinds of primates, which consist of orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, macaque monkeys, and langurs. As of 2016, there are 98 different species of primates in southeast asia. In 2020, at least five primates were listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as critically endangered.
Felids
Tigers are some of the most well-known wild cats from southeast asia. Other wild cats also inhabit southeast asia. Sumatra is home to about 77 clouded leopards, with around 10,000 worldwide. Several organizations and groups focus on conservation of wild cats in southeast asia.
Aquatic mammals
Aquatic mammals are often consumed as food in asia. Southeast asia has the most endangered aquatic species out of the other regions in asia. Some huge aquatic mammals, such as blue whales, inhabit southeast asia’s oceans.
Threats
Animals in southeast asia face several threats. Snares are some of the biggest threats; both to the animals and indigenous peoples and local communities. Many species from southeast asia are endangered also due to them being used as luxury food, medicine, tonics, and trophies. Habitat loss is another major threat to southeast asian wildlife. Southeast asia has some of the highest deforestation rates in the world.<ref name=":1" />
