FairCom

FairCom Corporation is a computer software company headquartered in Columbia, Missouri, with divisions located in Europe and South America. It designs database software for use by application developers. Their main product, c-treeACE, supports APIs for both SQL and NoSQL interfaces. This software is typically embedded within applications so it can be deployed with the application as an integrated solution.
FairCom software can be found in more than 100 countries worldwide. It has been ported to over 100 CPU/OS environments. FairCom technology is used by Federal Express, Computer Associates, and Sharp Corporation
and by 43% of the Fortune 100 companies.
History
FairCom Corporation was founded in 1979 by Dr. William Fairman.
Dr. Fairman holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He taught in the Industrial Engineering department at the University of Missouri-Columbia for five years. He has been published in several technical periodicals and holds a number of patents and copyrights.
In 1979, Dr. Fairman created Access Manager for Digital Research.
This file-handling product provided keyed, index-sequential access
using a binary tree (b-tree) algorithms for complex data management. He also introduced an application development tool (the c-tree file handler) for the platform.
FairCom released Micro B+ in November, 1979. This B+ tree file handling system provided a fast method to insert, delete, search, and retrieve records. It was available for use with early Microsoft languages (BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN, as well as other brands of BASIC and Pascal.
In 1984, FairCom released the c-tree File Handler.
This product was a design written in the C programming language. It was intended to provide a file-handling engine for the application development industry.
The FairCom database server was released in 1987 incorporating some concepts from the client/server model used in the company’s early work for Digital Research, Inc.
In 1990, FairCom released c-tree Plus, a replacement for FairCom’s earlier c-tree product. c-tree Plus added new features and enhancements to c-tree.
In 1992, Raymond Brown took over as president and CEO.
Dr. Fairman continued in his role as chief architect and remained active in the development of the product.
In 2004, FairCom added SQL access to its database. In 2008, the c-tree Plus software development kit was renamed c-treeACE Professional. The letters "ACE" (which stand for "Advanced Core Engine") were added to the name to indicate refinements to the architecture. At the same time, c-treeACE Express was introduced for rapid development.
In 2012, c-treeACE V10.0 introduced improvements in performance, scalability, and security.
In 2012, the core FairCom technology was packaged with a driver that allowed it to replace the file system offered by many popular COBOL compilers, such as Micro Focus (using the ExtFH architecture), ACUCOBOL, RM/COBOL, and isCOBOL. This allowed enterprises to upgrade their legacy COBOL applications to use the ACID-compliant transaction processing and SQL access provided by the FairCom technology.
This product was originally called c-treeACE for COBOL and then renamed c-treeRTG COBOL Edition.
The letters "RTG" in the name indicate that the product is "ready-to-go" because it requires no changes to the COBOL application. An edition for Btrieve applications was also released. A version of the FairCom technology is also sold specifically for replication. This approach to replication reads the transaction log and applies updates to the replica of the source database. This product is called c-treeAMS Replication Agent.
The letters "AMS" in the name indicate it is a member of the Advanced Module Series.
Locations
The corporate headquarters for FairCom Corporation are located in Columbia, Missouri.
In 1993, FairCom opened its first foreign operation, FairCom Europe, located in Gazzaniga, Italy.
FairCom Japan was opened in 1995 to service the company’s Pacific Rim clients. This office was later relocated to Tokyo, Japan and became FairCom Japan G.K. in 2011. The G.K. is no longer active as all Pacific Rim accounts are handled though the other offices.
FairCom Brazil, located in São Paulo, Brazil was opened in 1996 to serve South American clients with sales and support, as well as perform international development.
Products
c-treeACE Advanced Core Database Engine
This is the latest offering in their line of c-tree databases providing SQL and NoSQL access to data. This product is available as a software development kit (SDK), which allows developers to embed the database into their applications. The APIs provided allow developers to customize their use of the database at a fine level of granularity. Its architecture makes transaction processing available to all APIs, so immediately-consistent data is available from both SQL and NoSQL (ISAM) APIs.
c-treeRTG Ready to Go
This product replaces the file system provided by COBOL compilers. The COBOL language supports an ISAM file system, which makes it compatible the ISAM layer of the c-treeACE database. The benefits include adding SQL access and ACID-compliant transaction processing to the COBOL files.
c-treeAMS Advanced Module Series
These products are add-ons that leverage the FairCom technology. The c-treeAMS Replication Agent creates a synchronized replica of a c-treeACE or c-treeRTG database for use as a backup or reporting/analytics server.
Deployment
The FairCom products have been deployed across a number of industries including the following applications:
*High-speed processing of EFTs (Electronic Fund Transfers) in the financial industry
*Combining databases from multiple local agencies for emergency response call centers
*Warehouse/materials management systems
*Processing CDRs (Call Detail Records) in the Telecom industry
*Sensor control systems in automation environments
*Radio News management systems
*Office management
Accolades
Research firm Gartner has included FairCom in its Magic Quadrant report for operational DBMS based on its ability to execute and completeness of vision.
The 451 Research Group has placed FairCom c-treeACE in its list of NewSQL databases, which offer NoSQL scalability plus ACID guarantees.
