Dr. Evan Feldman (Born 1970 in New York) nephew of Jack Feldman, is an American conductor, arranger, and music text book author. Feldman is currently the assistant director of bands at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has directed a large number of ensembles throughout America. His book titled "Instrumental Music Education" was recently published by Routledge Publishing and is now being used in many Universities music education programs. Early years Feldman began playing Clarinet at Hewlett Elementary School and continued playing through Woodmere Middle school, and G.W. Hewlett High school. His early interest and inspiration came from playing in public music groups and his uncle Jack Feldman, who is best known for writing the lyrics to "Copacabana" and the Disney movie and TV show "Newsies". Schooling In May 1992, Feldman received his Bachelor of Arts in Music with honors from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He then proceeded to study at Ithaca College to receive his Masters of Music in Conducting in May 1995. His principle conductors at Ithaca were Rodney Winther and Grant Cooper. He later enrolled in the University of North Carolina to receive his Masters in Education in 1996. He studied at the Eastman School of Music until 2003, when he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts and was nominated for the Graue Award for Excellence in Musicology. Conducting and Teaching Feldman began his conducting career at the Eastman School of Music where he served as the Graduate conducting assistant from 1999-2002. During his time there he conducted the Eastman School of Music's wind ensemble and received the Teaching assistant prize being the first conductor to win it. In the middle of his career at Eastman he also served as a visiting instructor and director at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam New York during the spring of 2001. There he taught undergraduate conduction classes and conduced the symphonic and concert bands. In 2002, Feldman founded the Central Iowa Wind Ensemble, to create an opportunity for the local directors and private teachers to played valued wind music, he continued to conduct this group until 2005. In 2005, he became the director of bands at the College of William and Mary and taught beginning and advanced conducting classes along with orchestration. In 2008, he became the assistant director of bands at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is still there today. He also conducts the Greensboro Concert band, that began in 2010. He conducts the Triangle Wind Ensemble. Publications Feldman recently published a book titled "Instrumental Music Education" that is being used nation wide as a college textbook. He also has contributed to the series "A Composer's Insight" by writing the chapter on Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, David Bedford, and a soon to be Adam Gorb. Other of his writings have been included in "The Instrumentalist", the "Iowa Bandmaster Journal", the "MENC Music educators journal", and the "IGEB Alta Musica".
