Elevator episode

An elevator episode is an episode of a television series in which the characters are confined for the duration of the episode. They are often created in order to save on production costs. The term arose from the UK television series The Goodies, in which one episode took place entirely in an elevator.
Elevator episodes typically arise late in a series, when a show has overspent in producing prior episodes and needs to limit production expenses in order to stay within its budget. By contriving a storyline in which the characters are trapped in one place, the producers save the expense of multiple sets, outside shoots, and so on.
Elevator episodes often focus on character development among the principal characters. For this reason, they are often among the most highly rated episodes of a series. A show that features a guest actor each week will save the expense of that actor by creating an elevator episode that focuses on the principal characters. Likewise, a show that features a "monster of the week" will save on costume and special effects.
An example of an elevator episode is Marooned (an episode of Red Dwarf).
