Ecofys

Ecofys is a company specialized in research and consultancy on energy saving, renewable energy and climate issues.

Ecofys was established in 1984 and is part of the Econcern group. Ecofys has offices in ten countries in Europe and Canada and employs over 300 people. It is one of the largest consultancy firms in sustainable energy and climate policy.

Mission
In the same way as Henry Ford wanted to build a car for everyone, Ecofys wants to have a sustainable energy supply for everyone. This is the mission of the company and it determines which works falls in the scope of the company.

Expertise
Ecofys has a broad expertise and offers a wide range of services, based on our their knowledge of renewable energy and energy saving solutions. Areas of expertise include solar energy, wind energy, biomass, hydrogen technology, energy supply and climate policies. Their experts is organized around different markets. Technical, financial, legal and planning disciplines are combined to develop balanced and cost-effective solutions.

On the 4th of May 2007, the IPCC report has been released in Bangkok. As members of the Working Group III, six authors Ecofys contributed to this report. Prof. Kornelis Blok, Dr. Jochen Harnisch, Dr. Ernst Worrell, Dr. Monique Hoogwijk and Dr. Niklas Höhne contributed as lead authors in the area of emissions from buildings industry and on international climate policy. There is now no institute in the world that contributes so many lead authors.

Spin off

Wave Rotor
The simplest solution sometimes requires the greatest ingenuity. The Wave Rotor
prototype developed by Ecofys is one such instance. Based on the principles of wind
turbines, the Wave Rotor converts in a single turning movement the energy contained
in waves to drive a generator. This simple, lightweight but robust construction is better
able than other systems to withstand storms due to the minimal amount of exposed
surface. Ecofys has turned the idea of wave energy potential into a tangible concept,
thereby bringing a new renewable energy market closer to reality.

Closed Greenhouse
The Dutch greenhouse industry has ambitious environmental targets for making
energy savings and increasing the share of renewable energy sources. In order to help the
industry reach its aims, Ecofys has developed an innovative concept under the working
title Closed greenhous. The concept is based on subterranean energy storage.
In summer excess heat disappears out of the greenhouse through ventilation windows.
In the closed greenhouse the windows are shut and excess heat is stored underground.
Heat pumps bring the stored energy to the right temperature to warm the greenhouse at
night or in wintertime. Because of the better climate there is a much higher crop production and a large reduction on the energy bill. is now further developing the technology.

Other activies
Ecofys also sponsors a hydrogen racing car company called Formula Zero. And the holding Econcern sponsors NICE internet cafes running on renewable energy in The Gambia
