Eastern Air Lines Flight 346

Eastern Air Lines Flight 346 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight that crashed upon landing on May 18, 1972 at Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport. The Douglas DC-9, registered N8961E, caught fire upon impact. There were ten injuries and no fatalities. The flight originated from Miami International Airport and was to continue on to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
The causes of the crash cited by the NTSB were the pilot's improper IFR operation and improper in-flight decisions during low visibility conditions. Also cited was a failure by the pilot to follow approved procedures by not reporting crossing the outer marker beacon, even though it had been requested by the tower, and not acquiring landing clearance.
