Eastern Boulevard is a major arterial road in Montgomery, Alabama. Eastern Boulevard forms as indicated by its name the eastern part of the boulevard beltway system around the core of the city. The road follows a north-south path through the fast-growing eastern part of the city from the intersection of Southern Boulevard and McGhee Road/Troy Highway near the Montgomery Mall (where Southern Blvd because East Blvd) to the intersection of East Blvd and Dickson Drive/Wetumpka Highway (where East Blvd becomes Northern Boulevard). The road carries portions of US 80 and US 231, which do not go into the core of Montgomery, through the city. The southern half of the road, from Southern Blvd to I-85, is heavily commercialized. Major retail, hotels, and office locations can be found on this stretch the road. Winton M. Blount Cultural Park, home of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival is located on this part of the road. The north part half of the road, from I-85 to Wetumpka Highway, is considerably less congested. This stretch of the boulevard has been mostly converted to expressway with associated access roads. Eastdale Mall, a shopping mall anchored by Belk, Dillard's, JCPenney, and Sears are major retail centers located on this section of East Boulevard. Lagoon Park is also located here. Because of the lack of north-south arterials is eastern Montgomery, heavy congestion plagues East Boulevard. To relieve some of this congestion, a second loop is being constructed around the city.
