Dr. T.R. Gopalakrishnan Nair

Dr.T.R.Gopalakrishnan Nair is currently the director of Dayananda Sagar Institutions, one of the leading Education Centres of India. He holds degrees M.Tech. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a Ph.D. in Computer Science. He has 30 years of experience spanning across hard core research in engineering and technology along with highly contributing experience in industry and education. An ambidextrous personality, Dr.Nair, is famous for his lectures and he is widely invited in India and abroad. His latest book ‘Kindling Innovations’ is a collection of his key note addresses that touch upon topics like high-end technology , contemporary issues in economics and transformations of society in 21st century. As a painter, his brushes treated paper mostly with watercolor and some of his paintings which keeps up the neoclassical traits are shown in his site www.trgnair.org. He is good at music and keeps deep insight in to the science and literature of creative music, especially in Carnatic domain. A man of philosophy, Dr.Nair, shows his versatility on Indian philosophy while talking on the evolutions of universe and the living things on earth.
He started his career with research in electronics systems and developed a host of computer based systems in late 70s and 80s while being in Trivandrum, India . Most notable were the innovative View Data systems used by Press Trust of India widely during Asiad and the color Graphics and Desktop computers at a time the Indian technology was struggling to establish itself, for an identity. He developed the Reuter Monitor systems for production in India and was a visiting fellow to Reuters Laboratories in 1983. He also developed the pioneering Hindi display and editing systems at a time where no computers other than Mainframes were available for common need, using the character generation techniques using ROMs which he coded and developed along with his own Hindi electronic Keyboard. He was fortunate in those days to have a good professional association with Padmashree.Dr. Vijay P. Bhatkar (Founding Director, CDAC, 1986) and Mr. K.P.P. Nambiar (Chariman-Keltron and Ex. Secretary-DOE), who valued technology development in India as anything above profit making. It was some of the exciting time of life, when raw intelligence was the only asset professionals had in India, compared to the amenities that are available for research and development activities these days. He wrote several technical reports authoritatively describing the technology at that time. He introduced one of the smallest computers using Z80 processor and 64 K bytes dynamic RAM along with CP/M -80 operating system, which was demonstrated in IEEE Annual convention in 1980. It was a surprise design in those days because it was optimized to operate with only less than an ampere of current and at 5 volts with all the mass storage-controllers ( 8” Bulky Floppy) and serial & parallel ports connected directly to the processor. It could be noted that in 1980 while technology was evolving for personal computer architecture, this product integrated the video generating system using Motorola 6845 chip directly to the processor and handled video generation work directly from main processor Z-80. Probably, such innovations didn’t take off to a global scale because of the poor placement of the country with ‘license raj’ and incredible operational problems, people had those days in business and entrepreneurship. However, the View data Systems and Reuter Monitor Systems designed by him are considered to be roaring success saga of ER&DC, in an effort to create products to produce. As a manager of technology oriented developmental projects, he values this experience as exemplary.
He found more challenging projects when he got an opportunity to be with V.S. Space center, Trivandrum. The stimulating environment and the magnitudes of projects gave the right impetus for him to produce new ideas and create new systems. He initially worked in Inertial Guidance System Project where the digital control and guidance were in its initial stages of development for launch vehicle systems. The fascinating field of inertial navigation, guidance and control implemented through various computing systems offered a sprouting atmosphere where he enjoyed the results of creativity. He was deeply involved in the design and development of advanced ground surveillance and checkout systems with real-time operating systems which were originating as a subject by itself. The Intel® generated IRMX-86 operating system was the edifice on which many of the sophisticated algorithms and procedures to evaluate the Inertial Navigation and Guidance systems were developed in the Space Center laboratories. Visionary Scientists/Engineers like Dr.S.C. Gupta, Dr.G. Madhavan Nair, Padmashrre R.M.Vasgam, Dr.N. Vedachalam were some of the people with whom he had worked with in aerospace domain.
Later he worked on advanced simulation activities leading a team of multidisciplinary professionals. He received the national technology award PARAM, in 1992 from the adviser to Prime Minster. His pioneering effort in this domain culminated in the realization fully digital Six D Trajectory Flight Simulation Systems in real-time mode in order run the hardware in loop simulation for launch vehicle technology. He also received an Intel award for suggesting real-time graphics facility for IRMX-86 systems. After that, he had a stint of few years abroad too, as a professor of Computer Science.
He also worked as a consultant to Industries. Dr.Nair actively participates in professional bodies like IEEE, CSI , Institution of Engineers etc. He has delivered about 30 invited/keynote speeches at different places around the world in the recent past. A book is published with a set of selected speeches with the title “Kindling Innovations”. Currently, he is the director of DS. Institutions, Bangalore. He develops the strategies for growth and directions in research where Nanotechnology, Software Engineering and AI& Robotics are some of the thrust areas. He has published about 75 papers in these areas of Multidisciplinary research. He is the chief editor of international journals like ‘InterJRI - Science and Technology’, and ‘InterJRI- Computer Science and Networking’, (www.interjri.org). Dr.Nair is usually invited by various universities at national and international level for delivering lectures on frontier areas. He also gives professional lectures to societies, the latest being his lecture in IEEE GOLD Congress, Region 10 in 2009. He is also a member of the director board of few companies and his articles on current thoughts and lectures on education, technology and business are published by leading Indian Publications. Dr.Nair is a highly sought out research administrator whose 4 Ph.D. students have already completed doctoral programme and another 15 are working on different problems of international value. There are several streams of research that are progressing in the field of software engineering, Cognitive Networks, Bio-Informatics and Medical Imaging. He was also the ex.chairman of United Nations Expert Group of ICT & Education for Global Alliance for ICT & Development. The different varieties of papers published by him for the last two years are compiled by an editorial team of RIIC and made available in a series volumes titled “ Selected papers, Research In Computer Science and Multidisciplinary Applications”. A very detailed account of his acheivemnt are published in the form of a book titled “ Glimpses of Contributions from Dr.T.R.Goplakrsihnan Nair “ by the editorial team of RIIC. Dr.Nair maintains his web site through his own effort with his artistic approaches and it is available at www.trgnair.org.
