Dougald McPhail

Dugald McPhail Born Inverary, Argyll, Scotland in 1840. Immigrated to Natal in 1864. Married Isabella Petrie Smith, the daughter of Peter Smith in March 1875. He was one of the original three founders of the town of Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal. He, Peter Smith and Charles Willson began a mining company, Dundee Coal and Estate Company in the area on the farms Dundee and Coalfields. Served as a Quartermaster for the Buffalo Border Guard during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. He was one of the few British survivors from the Battle of Isandhlwana. He later fought for the British in the Anglo Boer War of 1899 - 1902. Died aged 101 in 1941.
