The NHS Consultants Association was formed in 1976 by medical consultants with a strong commitment to the NHS and its founding principles. It changed its name to Doctors For the NHS in 2014. Current Chair is Colin Hutchinson. In 2005 the Association initiated the campaign Keep Our NHS Public. It was active in the campaign against the Health and Social Care Act 2012. and strives to maintain the founding principles of the NHS as an institution for service not profit. Membership is open to all doctors who share these views. In January 2022 Hutchinson said “The principal reason the NHS now needs to make use of the private sector is because of long-term underinvestment.”
