Doctor Who logo

The logo of long-running British sci-fi television show Doctor Who has evolved, as the program itself has, over time. The Doctor Who logo has changed a number of times, with each logo usually very different to its predecessor. Up until its 2005 revival it had almost become tradition for the show to get a new logo periodically, often but not always coinciding with the appearance of a new actor in the role of the Doctor.

Description
Doctor Who has been running from 1963-2007 (although inconsistently). The show's long life has made it the longest running Sci-Fi show ever. Over the years the logo has changed a number of times.

Logo One

The first logo was plain white text on a black background and was used until part-way through the Second Doctor's first season. For more information on the first season see article; The First Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Greyscale
*Shape: Plain Text
*Lifespan: 1963-1967

Logo Two

In Patrick Troughton's first season the logo's white text changed to Times New Roman, though it remained white on a black background as the show was still produced in black and white until 1969. See The Second Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Greyscale
*Shape: Plain Text
*Lifespan: 1967-1969

Logo Three

When Jon Pertwee began his term as the Third Doctor, the logo changed dramatically. Colour was introduced (Pertwee's first episode was also the first Doctor Who episode produced in colour) and the text was once again altered, this time to a stylised typeface rather than plain text. A blue version of this logo was created for the Eighth Doctor's TV Movie and was subsequently adapted for use as the series' official logo. It currently serves as the logo of the classic (as opposed to new) series, especially for DVDs/videos, audios and related products of Big Finish Productions. See articles: The Third Doctor, The Eighth Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Pale Blue, Green, Blue
*Shape: Basic Text
*Lifespan: 1970-1973, 1996

Logo Four

Used between Jon Pertwee's final season and Tom Baker's penultimate season, this version incorporated a diamond with an arc (which itself contained the word "Doctor") and the word "Who" set across it. A variation of this logo with a red, orange and blue colour scheme was used on merchandise during the 1980s through to the mid-1990s. See article: The Fourth Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Blue
*Shape: Diamond
*Lifespan: 1973-1980

Logo Five

Used in the final season of The Fourth Doctor and throughout the entirety of The Fifth Doctor's tenure, this logo is in a neon light style, mostly white in appearance with a light-blue tint. See article: The Fifth Doctor
*Colour Scheme: White / Blue-tint
*Shape: Rounded Text
*Lifespan: 1980-1984

Logo Six

This logo was a slightly curved and purple-tinted version of the previous logo and served for all of Colin Baker's episodes. See article: The Sixth Doctor
*Colour Scheme: White / Purple-tint
*Shape: Rounded Text
*Lifespan: 1984-1986

Logo Seven

This logo - and the title sequence it accompanied - was used to emphasize the high-tech nature of the show. It was the first entirely CGI Doctor Who logo and title sequence. See Article: The Seventh Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Red and Silver
*Shape: Small Word Doctor and Large WHO, High-tech style
*Lifespan: 1987-1989

New Series Logo

The current Doctor Who logo has been used on merchandise since 2004 and on air during the show itself since 2005.
The logo has remained largely unchanged since 2005, though a slightly lighter-coloured variant was introduced for the third series in 2007, first appearing in The Runaway Bride. It is currently also used to differentiate merchandise pertaining to the new series from that of the classic series.
See articles:
The Ninth Doctor and The Tenth Doctor
*Colour Scheme: Orange and Black.
*Shape: Rounded, Elongated Diamond
*Lifespan: 2005-Present

Other Logos
Doctor Who Confidential

The Doctor Who documentary companion programme, Doctor Who Confidential, incorporates a Blue version of the Ninth/Tenth Doctor logo.

*Colour Scheme: Blue
*Shape: Rounded, Elongated Diamond

Death Comes To Time

The BBCi Doctor who story, Death Comes to Time, had a separate logo. Its diamond shape appears to have at least partially inspired the design of Ninth/ Tenth Doctor logo.

*Colour Scheme: Purple, Black
*Shape: Rounded, Elongated Diamond, with Text Either Side

The Seal Of Rassilon

The Doctor Who character Rassilon has a seal which appears in the show. This is a common Time Lord symbol, and is heavily incorporated into the design of the Eighth Doctor's Tardis, as well as occasionally appearing on merchandise in the 90's. It uses figures similar to Celtic knots.

*Colour Scheme: Black and White
*Shape: Circular, with Swirling Lines in Middle
