DNA Baser

DNA Baser Assembler is a tool for simple and batch DNA sequence assembly, sequence editing, and mutation detection created by HeracleSoftware in cooperation with Silva project. The program was designed to help the operator to process DNA/RNA sequences at batch.

During its trial period the program is fully functional. After the trial period expires all internal modules are still functional but the ‘Save contig’ function will be disabled. The program can be downloaded for free from developer’s web site. No activation key is required to run the program in trial mode.

Features

* Automatic sequence assembly
* Batch sequence assembly
* Low quality regions automatic trimming. The user doesn’t have to manually check and edit the sequences.
* Assemble to reference
* Synchronized display of chromatograms and contig
* One click navigation system between mismatches
* Chromatogram viewer and editor
* Project map
* Automatically save the contig to disk.
* Automatic detection and removal of primers/vectors
* Conversion between several file formats

Novelty

Since 2006, DNA Baser is the first tool that brings the much awaited concept of batch sequence assembly. The program liberates the user from complicated and time consuming chores like low quality ends trimming, manual vector removal, etc. With only three mouse-clicks the user can have a fully assembled contig made from any number of files, saved to its drive.
The authors of the software approached the design of the interface in a very different way. This new interface design allows the use to easily navigate through folders and import sequences, to visualize and edit the contig, sequences and chromatograms in a single window or to apply repetitive actions to all files.
The learning curve is very good as the program helps the user to learn through a pop-up tool tips system: as the users hold the mouse over an item (checkbox, button, menu…) a pop-up will show explanations about that item.

System requirements and portability

The program delivered as a 2 Mbytes monolithic (does not require any external modules like Java, DLL’s, ActiveX, etc) application. It is highly portable as it can be moved from a computer to another on a 2MB floppy or USB flash and it does not require installation or un-installation.

DNA Baser Assembler requires only 7MB or RAM (no sequence or contig loaded) and it can run also on older systems like Intel Pentium II or AMD K6.
Supported operating systems: Win NT SP5, Win 2000, Win XP, Win 2003, Win Vista, Mac OS X. The program is un-officially supported also on Windows 95/98. It seems that support for Mac will be added soon.
