Discovery Elementary School

Discovery Elementary is an alternative public elementary school in Surrey, British Columbia part of School District 36 Surrey.
The school allows students to learn at their own pace in a safe setting. Students are encouraged to develop skills that will enable them to become life-long learners including; research, discussion and effective verbal and written communication. Learning activities often involve small teams where strong students are encouraged to help their peers. As a result, Discovery students often develop strong learning skills that they will later utilize in higher educational and professional settings.

This school was founded about forty years ago by parents and teachers and is based on the Adlarian philosophy. The early days had a strong parent involvement in learning and students often learned in alternative environments including field-trips and museums. It was also not uncommon in those early days for students to learn from doctoral-level educators brought in for the benefit of the students.

As in the past, the classroom setting utilizes no desks, instead students sit in a circle on the floor. They sit in a circle because of a belief that everyone is equal in the circle of learning and that it is a better way to see everyone and communicate. There are, however, chairs in the computer room and sofas in the library. The school boosts a library of over 25,000 books, both non-fiction and fiction.
