Disappearance of Selene Delgado
|
Selene Delgado López is an alleged missing person who disappeared in Álvaro Obregón, Mexico City on April 22, 2001. Information on her life and disappearance is limited, leading some online users to speculate she does not actually exist, nor did someone of that name disappear. A photo, supposedly of Delgado López and broadcast on ' on Mexico's Canal 5 TV channel, spawned an urban legend due to its uncanny nature. Urban legend The legend began when viewers allegedly felt uncomfortable and afraid due to the bizarre nature of her photo. Some versions of the legend said that when Delgado's photo appeared on the screen, the TV channel froze or glitched for a few minutes before the broadcast abruptly cut to static. One early urban legend claimed that Delgado had died and that her spirit haunted Canal whenever her picture appeared on the broadcast, while others claimed that her picture was simply cursed. Rumors would soon began to spread that due to her uncanny appearance and generic expression, she is not a real person and her photo is AI-generated. This led to experts digging deeper, and discovered that no public record of Selene Delgado's disappearance was ever found, hence the spread of a new and definitive urban legend about her which furthered the alleged claims of Canal 5 freezing and glitching out whenever she appeared. This prompted many hoax videos to be uploaded online, depicting the glitching and other bizarre and surreal imagery overtaking Canal 5. Possible hoax An image was made around the same time Delgado reportedly disappeared. It's actually a composite of Derrick Todd Lee, or The Baton Rouge Slayer, but has since become associated with Delgado due to the facial proportions of this composite being very similar to that of Delgado's face. Some have suggested that this was one of the templates used to digitally generate Delgado's photo. A group of internet sleuths called Florecita Dreams made the same claim of which they supposedly proved this by using a 3D modelling program, demonstrating that Delgado's face was made from an amalgamation of other images of both real people and other composite. According to them, Delgado's face is too similar to these images to be real, and that her photo was constructed using features from various spaces. In 2020, Canal 5 posted several "creepy" videos to their Twitter referencing the disappearance, likely to increase interaction with the account. Later that year, the name Selene Delgado López was attached to a Facebook hoax which claimed that an account with that name was friends with accounts who hadn't added her as a friend. Due to the poor quality of cable TV at the time, especially in Mexico, it is possible that the glitches did in fact occur during the broadcast due to technical issues. Another theory is that Selene Delgado López never existed, and her persona was created by Canal 5 to scare their viewers or to spread awareness of safety and vigilance among young people.
