Bollywood or the Hindi film industry has delivered some really good films and even masterpieces over the years. Bollywood has made great contribution towards the Indian film industry and is a major entertainment industry in India. So far Bollywood has been a story of success. However, one must understand that it is Bollywood directors who are a major reason for the success of the industry. Career of Top Directors
Vishal Bharadwaj :
We can begin with Vishal Bharadwaj. So far this talented director had worked only as a composer for film from ‘Fauji’ (1995) to ‘Mulaqat’ (2002). However, he made his direction debut with the 2002 children’s film ‘Makdee’. From 2003 to 2005, he directed films like ‘Maqbool’ (2003) and ‘The Blue Umbrella’ (2005). However, his first much appreciated piece of work came in the year 2006, which was ‘Omkara’, which won the National Film Award’s Special Jury Award. Then he went on directing films that were well received and appreciated such as ‘Kaminey’ (2009), ‘Ishqiya’ (2009), ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ (2011) and ‘Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola’ (2013). Sanjay Leela Bhansali :
Then comes another popular director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His first film was ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’ in the year 1996. Then in 1999, he directed and also produced the hit ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. From 2002 to 2007, he directed films like ‘Devdas’, ‘Black’ and ‘Saawariya’. In the 2010s, he is credited for directing the Hindi movies ‘Guzarish’, ‘My Friend Pinto’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi’. Farhan Akhtar :
Farhan Akhtar is a young, energetic and passionate director in the industry. His first direction was the album ‘Breathless’ in 1998 sung by Shankar Mahadevan. He has directed films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ (2001), ‘Lakshya’ (2004), ‘Don’ (2006), a short film called ‘Positive’ (2007) and ‘Don 2’ (2011).
Prakash Jha :
This list would go incomplete without mentioning Prakash Jha. He began his career with directing documentaries in the 1980s such as ‘Faces After The Storm’ (1983), ‘Hip Hip Hurray’ (1984) and ‘Kudiattam’ (1986). He won awards for his direction such as the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film and Best Director award from the All India Film Awards Association. His first direction for a Hindi film came with the 1996 film ‘Bandish’. From 1997 till 2002, he directed films like ‘Mrityudand’ (1997), ‘Dil Kya Kare’ (1999) and ‘Rahul’ (2001). His first big direction which won accolades of appreciation was ‘Gangaajal’ in 2003. He continued his direction with films like ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ (2007), ‘Dil Dosti etc’ (2007) and ‘Rajneeti’ (2010). However his best shot came with films like ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’ (2011), ‘Aarakshan’ (2011) and ‘Chakravyuh’ (2012). His upcoming films are ‘Satyagraha’ (2013), ‘Rajneeti 2’ (2014) and ‘Gangaajal 2’ (2014).
Anurag Kashyap :
Finally, in the list comes Anurag Kashyap. He too is credited with directing some noteworthy Hindi movies in the industry. He began his career in the late 90s with ‘The Last Train To Mahakali’ in the year 1999. From 2003 to 2007, he has directed films like ‘Paanch’ (2003), ‘Black Friday’ (2007), ‘No Smoking’ (2007) and ‘Return Of Hanuman’ (2007). His career took a leap in 2009 with ‘Dev D’ which was a hit. From 2009 to 2011, he is credited with directing films like ‘Gulaal’ (2009), ‘Udaan’ (2010), ‘Mumbai Cutting’ (2010) and ‘That Girl In Yellow Boots’ (2011). He also directed the powepacked and hit gangster flick ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ (2012) and ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur 2’ (2012). His upcoming films are ‘Ugly’ (2013) and ‘Bombay Velvet’ (2013).
