With lyrics by Luc Plamondon and music by Richard Cocciante, this song is a solo by Quasimodo in the musical accepting that while he will always love Esmeralda, she will never love him back because of his ugliness, and questions why God made him this way. Meanwhile, La Monture is sung by Fleur-de-lys, who is aware of Phoebus's disloyalty and tells him she will only love him if he hangs Esmeralda.
