Dictionary of Words in the Wild
|
The Dictionary of Words in the Wild is a web project that collects and publishes photographs of words, as they are found within the context of everyday life. It is described as "a community collection of images of public textuality, specifically words outside of the usual print contexts"; these words are in the public view, in an interesting context where the location adds texture, visually provocative in some way and part of phrases that add another intersection of meaning.
Project Overview
The project is led by Geoffrey Rockwell of the McMaster University in Canada. The technical support comes from the Text Analysis Portal for Research project, a collaboration by six Canadian universities to build a centralized gateway to representative texts and sophisticated text analysis tools. Andrew MacDonald has developed and designed the website. The idea came from discussions at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, regarding the deformance of textuality and transcoding. A user can browse the dictionary, upload images of words, and also type a phrase that will be returned in the form of images. Anyone can register as a user, provided that the photos he/she uploads are appropriate in content and do not have contested copyright.
