Dede Koswara

Dede Koswara (the "Tree Man of Java") is an Indonesian man suffering from a disorder which causes bark-like growth on his skin. His pictures have earned him internet fame.

Condition
The disorder is caused by , a common infection that sometimes causes small warts to develop. Koswara suffers from the immune deficiency Epidermodysplasia verruciformis which renders him unable to stop the wart growth.

He became a victim of the disease after he sustained a cut below his knee when he was fifteen causing him to develop warts in that area which over the following decade propagated to the rest of his body. The disease proved to be incapacitating and Koswara ending his career as a fisherman and forcing him to join a freak show to support himself.

He is currently being treated by Indonesian doctors alongside American dermatology expert Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland. On August 26, 2008, MSNBC reported that Dede had returned home following surgery to remove thirteen pounds (5.8 kilo) of warts from his body. In all, 95% of the warts were removed.
