Debra Haaland

Debra Haaland is a Democratic party activist and politician who was most recently the Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. She is currently running for the New Mexico 1st Congressional District House seat that was vacated by incumbent Michelle Lujan Grisham to run for governor.
Early life
Haaland was born in Winslow, Arizona to a military family. Her Native American mother served in the Navy and is a fluent speaker of the Pueblo Keres language. Her father was Dutch Haaland, a 30-year career Marine who was awarded the Silver Star Medal for saving Marine lives during the Vietnam War.
Haaland and attended Highland High School in Albuquerque. In 1994 she obtained a B.A. from the University of New Mexico, and in 2006 she obtained a J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
Political life
Haaland was on the Board of Directors for the Laguna Development Corporation from 2010-2015.
From 2011 to 2012, Haagan was the State Native American Vote Director for Organizing for America New Mexico.
