David Denton S.C.

David H Denton, RFD S.C. (born 26 July 1957 Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian barrister and international arbitrator in Chancery Chambers , Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
In 1995 he founded the peak association of commercial law barristers in Victoria, the Commercial Bar Association , and was its President from 2001 - 2005. Since 2004 he has been President of the Australian Institute for Commercial Arbitration which is a national and international arbitral body associated with Victoria University, Australia
He completed his secondary education at Xavier College, Kew in 1974 and was a House Captain in his final year. He later became President of the Old Xaverians Association in 1995 and 1996 and is recorded in the List of Old Xaverians. After matriculating he attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon and then on to Monash University where he completed the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws in 1979. He later completed a Master of Laws also from Monash University.
He was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in 1981. He practised as a solicitor with Arthur Robinson & Co (now Allens Arthur Robinson). In 1982 he was called to the Victorian Bar. In the mid 1990s he spent time as a corporate lawyer before returning to the Bar in 1987 where he continued his practice in the commercial and appellate divisions of the Superior Courts in Australia.
In the 1990s he was active in the Australian Republican Movement and drafted a discussion model constitution for direct election of a president preserving the paramountcy of the parliament and the executive.
In 2001 he took Silk and was appointed a Senior Counsel ("S.C.") for the State of Victoria (formerly called "Queen's Counsel" in Australia) under Letters Patent from the Governor of Victoria.
He has been closely associated with legal training for the legal profession and was a Senior Tutor in Law at . As President of the Commercial Bar he developed the extensive Continuing Commercial Law Professional Development programme at the Victorian Bar, a programme then adopted by other Australian Bar Associations. Later he was actively involved in the development of the under-graduate and post-graduate law courses at the Victoria Law School at Victoria University, Australia to which he was appointed a Professorial Associate in 2004 and Course Director of the Graduate Diploma in Commercial Arbitration.
After his time at the Royal Military College, Duntroon he served in the Australian Army Reserve and was commissioned as an officer. He has served in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps, the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery and the Australian Army Legal Corps. He was awarded the Reserve Force Decoration ("RFD") in 1989.
A passionate follower of Australian Rules Football he has been Chairman of the Law Hawks, the In-House Legal Profession Supporter Group, of the Hawthorn Football Club since 2007.
