David Bertman

David Bertman is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands, Cheer, and Dance at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. His primary ensemble responsibilities include the Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble and the Spirit of Houston Cougar Marching Band, as well as overseeing the remaining bands and various chamber groups.
Prior to coming to the University of Houston, Bertman was associate director of bands at Haltom High School in Haltom City, Texas, for thirteen years. As an assistant director under Greg Hull, Bertman helped the band receive numerous awards, including the 1993 Texas 5A Honor Band and a performance at the 1993 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.
Bertman earned his BM in instrumental music education from the University of Oklahoma, under the tutelage of Gene Thrailkill, William Wakefield, and Roland Barrett, and his MM in conducting from the University of Houston, where he studied with Eddie Green. As a faculty member of the University of Houston, he received the Bill Yeoman Award in 2003, received the UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Science’s Alumni Faculty Award in 2004, and in 2005, received the Moores Society Faculty of the Year Award. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
Bertman also served as the brass caption head for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from Rosemont, Illinois from 2001 to 2009, at which time he was bestowed the honor of "Honorary Cavalier."
Bertman served as President in the Oklahoma University chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and as a brother of Phi Mu Alpha.
