Datacentre Unit

Datacentre Unit
A Datacentre Unit or DCU is considered to be a measurable level or threshold of any item or group of items within a datacentre. Equipment is part of a DCU. Once the maximum level for any component is reached (bandwidth, power draw, weight etc.), the DCU will be scaled out. This focuses on scalability with regard to performance rather than cost. It can be optimised to deliver highly efficient systems by strategic placement of platform elements.
By taking pressure away from capacity planning by having an efficient inventory, this method can ideal for:
* Shared hosting platforms with different workloads (placement needs to be automated);
* Uniform workloads where the solution design can scale out in a linear fashion, and little automation is necessary for placement.
This method of management of infrastructure also helps to reduce downtime caused by over-commitment of elements.
