Darkorbit

Dark Orbit is an online browser-based two-dimensional multiplayer game, released on December 2006 by Bigpointgames. The game takes place in a fictional space setting, where players join one of three space-faring companies and battle, trade, or mine resources. The game can be found on the developer website where it is featured along with many other games.
Gameplay
Dark Orbit is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game. At first, the player must select and join one of three space-companies from the website; Mars Mining Operations , Earth Industries Corporation and Venus Resources Unlimited.Once the player has joined a company, the actual game may be accessed by the "Start" button found on the website. This opens the game in a new window.
Moving and controlling the ship is done with the mouse. There are multiple space sectors in the game which are linked together by a portal system. Notable features include the space-station at the player's home base, and a radiation zone on the outer limits of each sector. The radiation zones continually damage any ship that enters until destroyed.
There are numerous alien ships that can be encountered in 'Dark Orbit'. Alien types are initially very weak near the home sectors where new players start out in. Aliens increase in strength in more distant sectors. There are three groups of sectors. The 'lowers' sectors, where players start out in, the PvP and the Battlemap sectors and the 'uppers' sectors where aliens are virtually impossible to destroy for a new player. There is also a second base for each company at the very end of the 'uppers' sectors. To get to the 'uppers' sectors , a player must cross the PvP map and the Battlemap. Players from a different company may wait at a portal and wait for a passing newer player to jump in. A player may not leave or jump using a jump ship from a PvP map or Battle map while under attack.
Money in game can come in the form of Credits, which are found in many ways and are used for purchasing many items or services. Players can purchase Uridium, another type of currency, with real money. Uridium is used for buying special equipment and repairing a destroyed ship. Ores can also be collected throughout the maps and sold at the space station. Additionally, the ores can be refined and later used to upgrade the ship's engines, firepower or shields.
Several events are featured in the game, such as small changes for Halloween, Christmas, and the outer-space version of football, SpaceBall.
Controversy
There was some controversy over the Leonov's previous design which was very similar to the Jedi Star fighter in Star Wars Episode 3. This was fixed in 2009.
The price of this game increases substantially over time. It is advertised as being a free and 'balanced' game. However, if you are starting in this game it is almost impossible to survive as a new player as they are often shot down by more experienced players.
The company oftentimes does not listen and/or respond to opinions of players, even after they asked for player feedback. The official dark orbit forums are moderated and censored to the point of null information. Many players complain that options placed in the game do not make the game better and does not develop new players. Many older players (2+ years of game play) often leave due to this issue. Player cheats are often incorporated into the game in order for increased profit (i.e. pilot bio, seprom, tech center, etc.). Players who do use cheats, are often left back into the game (i.e. box botter cheats). The game mods and administrators often favor high paying players in the game.
Many of the moderators have their own accounts in game and due to this fact are partial to certain players.
