Darcy Sterling

Darcy Sterling (also known as Darcy Smith, Darcy Smith Sterling and Dr. Darcy) is a Manhattan-based psychotherapist. She writes a monthly mental health advice column, Ask Dr. Darcy. Her group practice, Alternatives Counseling, specializes in young adult and LGBT issues.
Early life
Sterling was born in Livingston, New Jersey, on September 16, 1969. She graduated from Columbia University in 1996 with a Master’s degree in Social Work and received a Ph.D. from the New York University School of Social Work in 2006.
Professional career
Sterling began practicing as a clinical social worker in 1996. Two years later, she formed Alternatives Adolescent Counseling Center. The New Jersey-based practice specializes in young adult and LGBT issues. Her clinical style focuses on positive psychology.
Ask Dr. Darcy, Sterling’s monthly advice column, appears on her website and in GO magazine, and has also appeared in Psychology Today. Her advice has been highlighted in Woman’s Day, and she has been a featured speaker at LGBT events in New York. In 2009, Sterling was named one of GO magazine’s “100 Women We Love.” She has since appeared on The Bill Cunningham Show and on RT News segments.
Personal life
In 2009, two months after a civil ceremony in Connecticut, Sterling married Stephanie Koncicki in Manhattan, where they currently reside. Their married name, Sterling, was chosen in honor of a family of Holocaust victims with no surviving members.
