Culture of the 2000s

2000s in Popular Culture

The 2000s, the decade from 2000 to 2009 (pronunciation is not yet agreed upon, though "The Two-thousands" is the most popular), can be said to have become somewhat distinct from the culture of the 1990s by 2001, though some believe 2008 is still the 1990s in a pop cultural sense [http://decadeology.wetpaint.com/page/1990s-2000s+Equivalence+Theory] as music is still dominated by similar genres (alternative rock, teen pop, and hip hop being the core genres of both decades), many long-standing TV shows are either still on or still popular (The Simpsons, Seinfeld and South Park), fashion shares similarities (the trend of Body modification), and the overall attitude is similar, though the Slacker culture is no longer commonplace among teenagers.

While 1950s, 1960s and 1970s culture was the main influence of culture in the 1980s and 1990s, in the 2000s the 1980s became a large influence on culture - interestingly, this started in the early 2000s, only about ten years after 1980s, so it was almost like the 1980s style never went away.

Music

Music in the 2000s is hip hop on the Top 40/mainstream radio side, and alternative rock, including numetal, emo, post-grunge, indie rock, and post-grunge on the rock side.

The boy bands and girl groups of the late 1990s fell out of popularity by 2002 as people grew tired of the dominance of such music and hip hop again became more popular . Soon after, the two most defining genres of music in the 2000s - Dirty South/Crunk rap and emo music became the most popular genres for teens.

By about 2007 pop icons from the Disney Channel revived teen pop, allowing even for the late 1980s boy band New Kids on the Block to make a successful comeback in 2008 , nearly 20 years after they fell out of popularity in the early 1990s.

Technology

The 2000s were possibly the first time period in which new technology became trendy in itself, even for teenagers.

In the mid and late 2000s, text messaging became a trend in itself, along with the social networking website MySpace; people by the mid 2000s had completely accepted modern technology, and its association with nerds was obsolete.

Television

In the 2000s sitcoms, popular from about 1987 to 2000, were no longer the mainstay of television. In their place came the hour-long drama, including Lost, Heroes and Grey's Anatomy, and Reality TV, an experimental genre in the 1990s became a major part of television programming by 2001.

By the late 2000s, many networks streamed their shows on the Internet, making a TV set optional for watching TV. DVD sets made it possible to watch any episode of a show whenever you wanted, similar to how VHS in the 1980s made one independent of movie theaters for movie entertainment.

Fashion

Fashion in the 2000s differed in many ways from fashion in the 1990s. The slacker fashion of the 1990s, with its understated look, was looked down upon by the early 2000s and replaced with more showy clothes.

The body modification trend of the 1990s became far more popular still in the 2000s, with even cheerleaders and preppies adopting tattoos and non-traditional body piercings.

Artists such as Britney Spears made the "slut" look more popular among women in the 2000s, contrasting to the more respectable and feminine look women had in the 1990s. This trend is largely criticized as a social problem, or at least a symptom of a greater social problem. [http://www.crosscut.com/lifestyle-leisure/3046/An+adult+goes+to+prom/]
