Crowz was the would-be second album released by American band Slipknot. Originally to be released on October 31, 1997, the album stood as a "re-recording replacement" of the songs recorded and released a year prior on the band's 1996 debut Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. Crowz featured songs with current vocalist Corey Taylor, as well as former vocalist Anders Colsefini and former guitarists and drummer Donnie Steele, Josh Brainard and Marshall Parker respectively; Crowz also features input by particular members of the current line-up. The album was never released however, as the recorded material was scrapped and a five-track demo was soon recorded, this being the demo that the band was signed to Roadrunner Records for.
Background information "'Crowz' refers to a saying started which started following a spooky incident when we where taking Paul home after a studio session, and the road his place was on was covered entirely with crows, or blackbirds, or whatever. Thousands upon thousands of them. When the headlights flashed over them, they all took to the trees as one big, black mass. It was eerie. Then, they all sat in the trees and phone lines watching us. That's where "Crowz" came from. Plus, Shawn found a dead one in his driveway, and kept it in a big, commercial pickle jar, and carried it around at shows until it turned to mush. During shows Shawn would open the jar, this would cause him to vomit all over the place and also cause fans to start vomiting all over the place. It was sick, it was kept in the jar with all the bacteria and flesh eating creatures. It started secreting this brown liquid and became a fine sauce (yum). Some kids broke the jar open and played catch with it for a while and now it's disposed."
Availability As the album was never released, nearly a decade of inactivity and mystery surrounding the album passed before any public exposition to it. Crowz was copied onto CDs in extremely limited numbers, but these copies presumably no longer exist (although current percussionist Shawn Crahan and former guitarist Josh Brainard are said to own copies). The album's existence was supported slightly throughout the years however due to the appearances of select tracks on peer-to-peer clients, however most of these are a combination of fakes, live performances, and a few real tracks, in addition to tracks from the band's purported "basement sessions."
On April 19, 2007, the Slipknot fansite BlackGoat announced on a forum that Crowz had been uploaded and fans could now attain it. Initially however, the content was not authorised, but the following day the issue was resolved and it was made fully accessible for download. This is not the real Crowz album, but a compilation of live recordings and songs that appear on multiple versions of the Crowz bootleg.
Among the track listing only two songs featured here have ever been released commercially. The 'Apple of My Eye' demo version of "Interloper" was released on the digipak reissue of the band's Roadrunner debut Slipknot, albeit without the interlude at the beginning. "Snap" was released on the now out-of-print soundtrack to the 2003 horror film Freddy Vs. Jason.
Crowz was uploaded onto YouTube in 2007.
