Cristian Fleming

Cristian Fleming is an artist in the electronic music world, specifically in the experimental genre, known for his meticulously programmed beats and unique use of synthesizers and digital sound processing. Fleming is comparable to other artists in the genre, such as Aphex Twin, Autechre and Squarepusher, although his style of music is quite distinct from the three. Fleming began releasing electronic music officially at the age of 25, although he had musical involvement for many years prior, playing bass guitar at 17, and had already begun working on electronic music at the age of 18.

Music

Fleming released various records primarily under the artist name of Unit, starting in 1999 with "Hello... My Name Is Unit" [http://www.amazon.com/Hello-My-Name-EP-Unit/dp/B00000I4FV/refsr_1_2/103-0100999-7419016?ieUTF8&smusic&qid1192455684&sr=8-2#moreAboutThisProduct] with the word Unit in braille on the album cover, continuing through 2005 with his latest release, a re-release of "The Narcoleptic Symphony / Hello... My Name Is." Fleming has released music on the label Force, Inc., in Berlin, Germany, under the Imp moniker.

Fleming also started his own label, Co.Ad.Audio, pronounced "code," based in Brooklyn, NY, which he recruited various artists for, including Bob Humid, Datach'i, NKH, and Velapene Screen . Releases on the label also included tracks by Fleming himself, also under the Unit moniker. The life of Co.Ad.Audio spanned from 2001 through 2004, at which point it was dismantled for various reasons.

Fleming is widely known for his music in Europe, arguably more so than in the United States, with the reason behind this likely stemming from the fact that European culture tends to embrace electronic music more so than in the US. Fleming has spent time touring all over Europe at shows with other European electronic musicians.

Album Notes on "Hello... My Name Is Unit" Record

On the four tracks on this EP Unit invites us on a studio tour. "We Are in Love" is Unit's love affair with electronica and with his electronics. 909 drum machines pump into 808 drum-and-bass rhythms, accompanied by stop-and-go Kraftwerk-like sounds. It's a trip.

Though Unit is more than the sum of his contemporary influences, "Haldol" is the best impersonation of an unlikely summit between Autechre and Tangerine Dream yet. "1.4 Four," with its soaring, outer space electronics and hissing, morphing hip-hop samples, sounds Germanic, too, like Klaus Schulze reinventing himself as Aphex Twin. "Tri Parallax" is everywhere: part Black Dog, part Richard Kirk, its residual beat streams and over-arching synth curls spill out of the amplifier.

Other Involvements and Careers

*In addition to his music career, Fleming has a career in graphic design in Manhattan, during which he has done work on the corporate, corporate freelance and personal levels. Fleming has been involved in multiple political engagements, currently is a political cartoonist for the Brooklyn Paper Weekly, and has a weblog with his cartoons and political writings.
