Creedence Clearwater Revival's catalogue of songs has frequently been used or referenced in popular culture despite the objections of songwriter and lead singer John Fogerty Creedence Clearwater Revival in Media is a compilation of television, books, films, recordings, and other appearances of Creedence Clearwater Revival music.
Television
* "Up Around the Bend" plays in the 1998 HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon as Pete Conrad and Alan Bean land on the Moon. (This is an anachronism, as Apollo 12s lunar flight took place in November, 1969, and the song came out in April, 1970.) "Bad Moon Rising" also plays during the Apollo 16 scenes.
* In The Simpsons episode "Mr. Spritz Goes to Washington", Homer Simpson sings a portion of "Bad Moon Rising", after hearing Marge ask someone to perform CPR. Also, in the episode "Lisa the Beauty Queen" a portion of "Proud Mary" is performed.
* In the American TV program Married With Children, Al Bundy sings portions of "Proud Mary", Who'll Stop the Rain, and Norman Whitfield's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", which CCR famously covered.
* On the TV series My Name Is Earl, CCR is confused with CPR (like on "The Simpsons") and Randy begins to sing during the medical emergency.
* "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" is used in , the final episode of TV Series Stargate SG-1. This was only the third time that a song not written by the crew of Stargate was used on the show.
* On the TV show Gilmore Girls, the character Jackson Melville is a fan of CCR, and the show has frequently referenced them. In the episode "I Solemnly Swear", Jackson's wife puts on CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" before he realises that she might have cheated on him; "CCR" gets mentioned six times within four lines of dialogue, which ends with Jackson's "You ruined Creedence for me!". In "Those are Strings, Pinocchio", Jackson offers to put some CCR music on. In "Raincoats and Recipes", Jackson sports a Creedence shirt that he says he got as an anniversary from his wife.
* In an episode of TAI TV, guitarist Mike Carden of The Academy Is... is seen dancing on his 21st birthday to "Down on the Corner"
* In the American TV program Dexter, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" was used in one of Dexter's flashbacks, in 1973 when his father listens to the song on the radio and turns up the volume.
* In the American sci-fi drama television series Supernatural, "Bad Moon Rising" is played in the Season 1 finale. "Run Through the Jungle" is played in a Season 3 episode when Sam and Dean meet someone in a bar. The song "I Put a Spell on You" was also featured in a Season 3 episode.
* ESPN football analyst Chris Berman gave former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Andre Rison the nickname "Bad Moon Rison".
* In the TV show Las Vegas, last episode of 1st season, Long As I Can See the Light is playing while Danny and Mike are driving on the Strip.
* In the first episode of Cold Case, the entire song, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" was played at the end of the show.
* In Chuck, sang "Fortunate Son" during the Buy More revolution in the episode "Chuck Versus the Beard".
* In British TV show "Skins", at the very beginning of episode 8 of Series 4, "Run Through The Jungle" is played.
Books
* In Nick Hornby's book A Long Way Down, CCR is quoted as being the disease which one of the main characters is dying of. In reality, he is not dying, he is just too ashamed to admit his reasons for committing suicide. He cites CCR because they are one of his favourite bands.
* In the book The Shining by Stephen King, there is a portion of the lyrics to "Bad Moon Rising".
* In the book The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, the song "Run Through The Jungle" is mentioned playing on the car radio towards the end of the story.
* In the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, several times, Eddie says how his brother used to pull out his Creedence records from time to time.
* Lewis B. Puller's novel The Fortunate Son was named as a result of this song.
Films
* "Born on the Bayou" was played in the beginning of the 1998 comedy film The Waterboy
* "Bad Moon Rising" was played during the end credit roll in the 2007 comedy film Mr. Woodcock
* "Keep on Chooglin'" was played in the 1980 film Where the Buffalo Roam.
* "Fortunate Son" was played over the beginning and ending credits of the remade The Manchurian Candidate (2004) as well as during the ending credits of Live Free or Die Hard (2007); the 1996 film My Fellow Americans features "Bad Moon Rising"; "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" appears in the trailer for December Boys.
* In Apocalypse Now, during the Playboy bunny scene, the band plays "Suzie Q".
* In the 1998 film The Big Lebowski, the main character, Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski, lists "Creedence" as his favorite band. Two of the band's songs, "Looking out My Back Door" and "Run Through the Jungle," can be heard during the course of the film, but were inexplicably not included on the film's official soundtrack.
* "Keep on Chooglin'" was played in the 2007 film Wild Hogs
* In the 1994 film Forrest Gump,
* A group of slugs sing "Rolling Down the River" in the final scene of the 2003 animated filmFlushed Away
* "Travelin' Band" appeared in the 2003 Brazilian film O Homem Que Copiava in relation to an over-the-hill rock fan who has a preference for Creedence. It plays during the armored car robbery sequence.
* In the remake of the film The Longest Yard, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" is played whilst the convicts train in the giant mud pools left by the guards after a sabotage attempt.
* "Fortunate Son" is used in the documentary film Dale
* In the final scene of the 2009 film State of Play, "Long As I Can See the Light" is played.
Recordings
* In the Nickelback song "This Afternoon" from the album Dark Horse, the lyrics "Jukebox crankin' out the CCR; Had a few to Susie Q this afternoon" is a reference to the band.
* Lily Allen references the band in her song "Him'" from the album It's Not Me, It's You, claiming God's "favourite band is Creedence Clearwater Revival".
* In the song "I Love Creedence" by Casiotone For The Painfully Alone from the album Etiquette, the narrator is named Creedence Clearwater
Other appearances
* Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana started a CCR cover band before starting Nirvana.
* "Lookin' Out My Back Door" was covered by Finnish Metal group Children of Bodom on their 2008 single "Blooddrunk".
* The Scottish football club Dundee United use the song "Up Around The Bend" whenever they score at their home ground
* At Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party in February 2008, rock band Daughtry, Chad Kroeger and Slash performed a cover of "Born on the Bayou".
* Jamie Thomas, professional skateboarder, used "Fortunate Son" as his song in his video part in the Zero Skateboards video "New Blood"
* "Fortunate Son" was played in the intro of Battlefield Vietnam It is also on the in-game soundtrack of the same game, as it is also used in the teaser trailer and soundtrack for the Vietnam expansion pack for "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" . It also appears in Call of Duty: Black Ops.
* "Born on the Bayou" was recorded and translated into French by Francis Cabrel on his 2008 album Des roses et des orties, as "Né dans le Bayou."
* A cover version of Fortunate Son was released as DLC for the Rock Band series in 2007. In 2010, a CCR themed track pack was released, including the master recording of Fortunate Son.
* "Fortunate Son" is featured as a playable song in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.
* "Green River" is featured on the fictional radio station K-DST in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
