Craig Ewert

Craig Colby Ewert (March 12, 1947 - September 26, 2006) was an American man suffering from the effects of the degenerative motor neuron disease who opted to undergo assisted suicide in Switzerland. The subject of this death became controversial at the end of 2008 as a British satellite television channel was set to air "Right to Die?", a videotaped documentary covering Ewert's last four days of life on 10 December 2008. The documentary was produced by Oscar-winning Canadian filmmaker John Zaritsky and has previously been shown on Canadian and Swiss TV and at film festivals without controversy.

The retired university professor was 59 at the time of his assisted suicide, which occurred at a rented Zurich apartment while his wife watched nearby. An employee of the Swiss clinic, Dignitas, can be seen preparing a lethal dose of drugs on camera and Ewert drinks it and dies. He died listening to Symphony No. 9.

He lived in North Yorkshire, England with his wife of 37 years, Mary Ewert, who retained his ashes after her husband's cremation.
