ConsumerBase LLC is an Evanston, Illinois, USA-based data marketing company that is well known player within the direct marketing industry.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer is Larry Organ, a Canadian born entrepreneur.
History ConsumerBase began in 2001 as CustomOffers, an email marketing company. In January of 2002, CustomOffers was purchased by Canadian firm Mosaic Group Inc. for just under $50 million (U.S.).
Mosaic Group (previously listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol TSX:MGX) organized CustomOffers into an operating division and named it Mosaic Data Solutions.
By the end of 2002, however, Mosaic Group faced severe financial difficulty due to excessive debt and filed for bankruptcy protection.
In 2003, Larry Organ repurchased the data solutions division out of bankruptcy and, once again, began to lead it as a stand-alone company with the new name of ConsumerBase.
Corporate Organization
ConsumerBase continues to provide email marketing as well as Search Engine Marketing and other data products. It is divided up into three divisions; Data, Digital Agency and Websites.
The company is still headquartered in Evanston, IL and has expanded to include offices in Atlanta, GA; Cincinnati, OH; Denver, CO; and Fort Myers, FL.
Controversy
ConsumerBase stirred considerable controversy in the spring of 2006 when Forbes magazine ran an article entitled “You Can Surf But You Can't Hide” in which the author voiced privacy concerns over ResponderInfo, a product carried by the company.
Additionally, ConsumerBase has a patent pending on a process it employs for data collection. The company captures behavioral information online by recording search engine clicks from email campaigns, stores the data and markets it for use in both online and offline marketing campaigns.
