Conscription in the European Union
Currently, 18 out of the 27 European Union member states, don't have obligatory military service (conscription) for their citizens.
These members are (listed by accession date to the Union):
* Belgium
* France
* Italy
* Luxembourg
* The Netherlands
* Denmark
* Ireland
* United Kingdom
* Portugal
* Spain
* Czech Republic
* Slovakia
* Latvia
* Hungary
* Malta
* Slovenia
* Bulgaria
* Romania
Poland and Sweden plan to abolish conscription in the near future, while other members are expected to follow.
