Company of Heroes: Eastern Front
|
Company of Heroes: Eastern Front is an upcoming fan-designed modification for Relic Entertainment's critically acclaimed real-time strategy game Company of Heroes. Set in the Eastern European theater of World War II, the mod primarily features the Soviet Union's Red Army and Nazi Germany's Ostheer. The mod will be released for download on January 21st, 2010 according to the official site announcement on December 30th, 2009. Gameplay Eastern Front has been promised by the development team to not harm users' original copies of Company of Heroes or any of the subsequent expansions in any way, with players still able to play the official versions normally, including online play. Rather, the modification will add new factions and maps which will be fully integrated into the existing features and content. Factions Red Army The primary focus of Eastern Front is the addition of a third playable Allied faction, the Red Army. The faction would feature a different play style modelled after the Soviet Union's actual use of troops and strategies in World War II. Features: *No starting unit: As a representation of the Soviet Union being caught unaware by Operation Barbarossa, the player will start a mission with no units present on the map, but will be able to produce cheap units quickly. *No retreat: True to the Soviet practice throughout World War II of using NKVD officers to punish desertion (per Joseph Stalin's Order No. 227), the retreat ability will be unavailable in the in-game menu. *No re-crewing: Red Army soldiers will not have access to dropped German weapons. *Already veterans: Red Army units will be unable to earn veteran ranks on the battlefield, instead relying on producing units of varying experience and quality, from poorly trained/equipped conscripts to the elite Red Guards. *Cool-downs instead of costs: While upgrades will require costs as with other factions, the abilities they unlock will instead rely on cool-down timers rather than using munitions points. Doctrines: *Propaganda Strategy: Centered on defenses and artillery, this doctrine will allow the Red Army to build machinegun bunkers and trenches, invigorate infantry units with defense bonuses, or recruit and earn elite artillery units and abilities including the BM-13 Katyusha. *Urban Combat Strategy: Centered on close combat and guerrilla warfare, this doctrine will allow the player to unlock elite snipers, partisan fighters or the KV-2 heavy tank, and advanced close-combat abilities including sabotage and flamethrower support. *Breakthrough Strategy: Centered on combined arms and tank combat, this doctrine will grant the Red Army player access to the IL-2 Sturmovik for aerial support, advanced tank abilities and units including mechanics, or the heavy ISU-152 self-propelled gun. Ostheer While not slated for initial release, a third Axis faction, the Ostheer ("Eastern Army" in German), is planned to be included in future updates of Eastern Front. Single player Single player campaign A full single-player campaign for the Red Army is planned as a future update for Eastern Front. It would cover various stages of the Eastern Front campaign, such as the Battle of Bialystok-Minsk, the battle for Sevastopol, the encirclement of the German 6th Army in Stalingrad, and the Battle for Berlin.
