Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands
Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands is the primary commanding officer of the British Forces Falkland Islands overseeing the security and protection of the British overseas territory, the Falkland Islands.
This joint branch of the British Army comprises of servicemen and servicewomen from the Royal Navy, British Army and the Royal Air Force.
On the 2nd of April 1982, Argentina took control over the Falklands.
In June of the same year, the British Forces took back control of the Islands and the British Government invested heavily in the development of defences near and located on the island.
The centrepiece of this project was RAF Mount Pleasant, the base was finished in 1985 and opened officially in 1986. It is still operational to this day and is home to No. 1435 Flight RAF, No. 1312 Flight RAF & No. 1310 Flight RAF. It is officially controlled by the Joint Forces Command of the Ministry of Defence.
The Commander oversees the 1,350 personnel in 2012, located in the Falklands.
