Cinematism is the process/art form, in which one creates cinematography with one's mind using music (often times using music on random) as a medium or conductor of the overall result of a not yet filmed film, etc. It can also be a jump off point to create through your imagination inspiration by the first thing you think of when your emotions are uplifted through the experiencing of music (at random or otherwise), often in a cinematic way. The act of listening to a piece of music and being moved to create a cinematic moment (or a moment that could be in a movie) with your surroundings and those around you, thus creating a story for those that participate. A prime innovator of the cinematism technique has been employed by acclaimed film director and Palme d'Or winner, Quentin Tarantino. In an awards ceremony in the Critics Choice Awards celebrating Tarantino, he said he got his start in filmmaking in his 20's. Music is an important part of his filmmaking style. He talked about how he started filmmaking by hanging out alone in his room, playing records like Duane Eddy's "Rebel Rouser" and writing scenes to go along with them. "I'm kind of still doing the same thing right now," he joked. He further stated in an interview that, "one of the things I do when I am starting a movie, when I'm writing a movie or when I have an idea for a film; is, I go through my record collection and just start playing songs, trying to find the personality of the movie, find the spirit of the movie. Then "boom" eventually I'll hit one, two or three songs“ or one song in particular, oh this will be a great opening credit song." He later said, "one of the things about using music in movies thats so cool, is the fact that if you do it right, if you use the right song, in the right scene; really when you take songs and put them in a sequence in a movie right, it's about as cinematic a thing as you can do. You are really doing what movies do better than any other art form; it really works in this visceral, emotional, cinematic way that's just really special. And when you do it right and you hit it right then the effect is you can never really hear this song again without thinking about that image from the movie." The art form of cinematism is in its infancy, but will continue to be employed by film makers throughout the world.
