Chuut-Riit

Chuut-Riit is a recurring character from the Man-Kzin Wars series of books. Along with Buford Early and Ulf Reichstein-Markham, Chuut-Riit is both one of the few major recurring characters, and one of the few characters to have a large role in stories written by more than one author.

Chuut-Riit was the commander of the Kzinti armada which garrisoned Wunderland during the First Man-Kzin War, serving as the region's governor. He arrived there in 2400, 33 years after the world's capture. Chuut-Riit was a relative of the Kzinti Patriarch and as such was a ranking nobleman; in addition, he was a highly-successful conquest lord; unlike most Kzinti, who used their vaunted strategy of "scream and leap," Chuut-Riit utilized feints, strategic withdrawals, and restraint. He had plans of creating a fifth fleet that was completely made up of his elite, and was heavily drilled with the think before you leap policy. This fleet would have stood a much better chance of success than the other fleets due to better discipline and better logistic support. This fleet was never fully completed as Chuut-Riit was assassinated prior to its launching. The rest of the fleet fell apart during the brief Kzin civil war on Wunderland.

In 2403, he launched the fourth attack against Earth, and very nearly won. The fourth fleet had been filled with his enemies and the warriors who had proven unable to adapt to his tactics, sending them out on what amounted to a suicide mission; even as it was, his strategy had crippled the solar system's defenses when it arrived in 2408. Chuut-Riit was in the advanced stages of preparing a fifth attack, composed entirely of his trained professionals and new technology, in 2419. Nevertheless, a United Nations vessel, the Catskinner, arrived with a sneak attack, unloading several undercover operatives. They managed to infiltrate his home's defenses, and Chuut-Riit died by being eaten alive by his ambitious and young sons.
