Char Vinnedge (1943 - 1997) is one of the original creative forces behind fuzz tone guitar and also was the leader of one of the first all girl rock groups to be signed, pre-dating “FANNY”. Her career as lead guitarist / singer began in the early 1960s with her all girl group the TREMOLONS. Char experimented with fuzz guitar tones and feedback sustain with the TREMOLONS playing all instrumentals at first. Vinnedge recorded a single with the TREMOLONS on Wildwood Records (Benton Harbor, MI) for Komotion Music that contained: "Please Let Me Know" (w/vocals) and "Theme For A DJ" (instrumental). About a year later, they signed a record deal with Dunwich Records, changed their name to "THE LUV'D ONES", and released several more singles over a five year period. "THE LUV'D ONES" disbanded in 1969. It was at that time Vinnedge went on to form the mixed group “SYRUP”, a completely new group that included one guy. During one of SYRUP's shows, a manager from Silver Fox Records called the club where they were playing, and asked Vinnedge to come to Memphis to cut a demo. Vinnedge almost turned down the offer, but the other band members prodded her to go, which she did. The demo caught the ear of Billy Cox, the bass player for Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys. Nitro Function was formed and a new album ensued in which Vinnedge wrote 70% of the songs. The group was signed to Pye Records in 1971.
