Chaosball

Chaosball is a recreational game created in December 2008 at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, but has no official affiliation with any institution. The game requires use of a standard racquetball court and a reflex ball, in addition to the players. While it can be played with only 2 people, most players find it more enjoyable when anywhere from 3 to 6 people participate.
General
The first serve of the match is determined randomly by the participants. In subsequent games, the lowest-scoring player in the previous game serves first. Prior to each serve, the player should announce his/her score. Contact by the ball on the side walls, the back wall, and/or the ceiling is legal at any point in the game except where noted during the serve. Scoring limit is determined by the players before play begins.
Serving
A serve is made by a player throwing the ball. A legal serve must first strike the floor anywhere; next, the ball should strike the front wall. The ball may then make contact with the side walls, back wall, ceiling, or neither without penalty, provided it lands behind the serving line (the marked line closest to the front wall). A legal serve may not strike the serving player. If the ball does not land behind the serving line, it is considered a free ball (see appropriate section).
Gameplay
After the ball strikes the front wall on the serve throw, any non-serving player may attempt to catch the ball - either before or after it makes one bounce on the floor behind the serving line. The serving player may not interfere with other players or the ball. If a player catches the ball, then he or she announces his/her score and serves the ball immediately. Only a second bounce on the floor ends a rally; if the ball ricochets off the side walls, back wall, or ceiling, it remains in play until the second bounce on the floor..
Scoring
A point is awarded to the serving player each time his/her serve is not caught and bounces on the floor a second time. Gameplay pauses before the final game point is served.
Free ball
In the case of an illegal serve (including contact between the serving player and the ball), “free ball” is in effect (and should be announced by all participants for clarification) and all players may attempt to immediately recover the ball by any means necessary. Whoever does so gains the serve and may score from it, but he/she receives no point for the recovery. Since a rally only ends because of a second bounce on the floor, it is legal for a player to catch the ball in the “free ball” zone (i.e., between the serving line and the front wall) even before the first bounce; play continues as normal.
History
The game of chaosball originated in December 2008 and continued to develop over the following months. In addition to the creators at Marshall, people have played games in Tennessee and Virginia, and two of the creators are currently attempting to develop a fanbase in North Carolina as well. The game became popular as a warm-up exercise for a regular racquetball game, but can still be played on its own.
