Certified Divorce Financial Analyst

The Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) designation is a professional certification for experts in financial matters related to divorce. The designation is conferred by the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts. The CDFA designation was first introduced in 1993 and qualifies candidates to provide specialized advice to clients and their attorneys in the field of pre-divorce financial planning. There are currently more than 5,000 CDFA professionals through the United States and Canada. Requirements In order to qualify for the CDFA designation, candidates must have a minimum of three years' experience as a financial professional, accountant, or matrimonial lawyer. To earn the designation, the participant must complete a series of self-study course modules and pass an exam for each module. To retain the designation, CDFA professionals must obtain continuing education credits and pay an ongoing membership fee. They must also adhere to the IDFA’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. Curriculum The CDFA designation curriculum is divided into four modules. Throughout the course, candidates must various financial topics related to divorce, including: *Financial and Legal Issues of Divorce **Cataloguing and evaluating marital assets **Looking for missing assets and inconsistencies **Reviewing expenses and calculating income *Advanced Financial Issues of Divorce **Identifying marital and separate property **Determining the value of property **Understanding and evaluating pensions and retirement plans **Understanding guidelines for spousal and child support **Evaluating Social Security benefits **Understanding debt and bankruptcy in terms of divorce *Tax Issues of Divorce **Understanding and assessing tax issues relating to property, retirement plans, and spousal and child support **Explaining tax issues specifically relating to divorcing couples **Analyzing income tax returns *Working as a CDFA: Case Studies Related designations Certified Financial Planner Certified Public Accountant Chartered Financial Consultant
