Ceiling server

Ceiling Server
The idea for a Ceiling mounted server originated on the Facepunchstudios.com forums (http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=520673)

The aim of a ceiling mounted server
Ceiling mounted servers are normally use to host a hidden game server or website on a school network. They are run remotely using VNC or Remote Desktop. The reason people run ceiling servers is to save their Internet bandwidth, leaching off school network.

There´s also another goal with the ceiling server, to make an enormous amount of uptime. Since the power in schools are likely to be on without downtimes, schools are an ideal place.

Computers, Software and Games used for a ceiling server

Computers:
Typically old PC's, usually 900-1600Mhz CPU, 128-512mb ram, and a 10-40GB HDD.

Software:
To control the server remotely you must use a remote desktop client like VNC or Windows Remote Desktop. They also run game servers, and HTTP.

Games:
Currently the only notable Ceiling Server runs; CS:S dedicated server and Soldat dedicated server.

Locations for Ceiling Servers
Most Ceiling Servers are hidden in a roof or ceiling. They must be near a power source of some sort, and a network port/Internet connection. An alternative solution could be to connect via a wireless usb/pci card.

Problems for ceiling servers
Discovery; Having your ceiling server discovered could be disastrous. If the finder was a snitch your server could be confiscated, if the finder liked the idea they might help with finding parts and equipment. Firewalls; most schools have a firewall blocking internet traffic and diverting HTTP traffic to a filtering proxy, So most Ceiling servers have to be on a separate internet connection, or have the firewall allow all internet traffic to and from you server. breakdown's; having your server breakdown over a holiday break can be bad, Because access can be difficult and repairs in a cramped ceiling can be frustrating.
