Cash for fatwas scandal was a scandal unearthed by TV Channel. The TV sting operation showed some Muslim clerics demanding and receiving cash for issue of fatwas.
The clerics allegedly issued fatwas on a number of topics like that Muslims are not allowed to use credit cards, double beds, or camera-equipped cell phones, and should not act in films, donate their organs, or teach their children English or that Muslim girls should not wear jeans. One cleric belonged to famous Islamic seminary the Darul Uloom at Deoband.
In response, at least two clerics, Mufti Habibur Rehman, have since been suspended from the fatwa department. Indian Muslim leaders announced to create a new body that will monitor the issuing of fatwas in India.
