Carlos Olivera

Carlos Olivera (played by Oded Fehr) is a U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) agent, although the film changes the group name to U.B.C.F (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Force). Carlos is based off of the video game character in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis of the same name, but the game version of Carlos has the surname of Oliveira (a surname of portuguese-brazilian origin). In the film, his surname is spelled Olivera (a surname of spanish origin) as shown on the back of the U.B.C.F. uniform.

He makes his first appearance in Resident Evil: Apocalypse serving as a U.B.C.F. soldier along side others trapped in Raccoon City. In the sequel, Resident Evil: Extinction, he helps lead a convoy of the remaining survivors after the world wide outbreak.

Appearances
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
In Apocalypse, Carlos is shown as the sole survivor of his U.B.C.F. squad that was sent into Raccoon City to help contain the citizens. When the viral outbreak overwhelms any security, all those inside the city gates are locked in. Trying to escape, he is bitten by a zombie and becomes infected with the T-virus, but joins other survivors after accepting an offer proposed by an Umbrella scientist, Dr. Ashford, to find his daughter, Angela, in exchange for an escape route out of the city. During this time he meets L.J., Alice, Jill Valentine, and they together are able to find Angela. The group head to City Hall for transportation out of the city and on the way, Alice administers the antivirus, saving him from turning into a zombie.

At the evacuation point at City Hall, the group is captured by Umbrella under orders from Major Timothy Cain. After a battle between Alice and the Nemesis, as Cain orders the Nemesis to kill Alice, Carlos breaks free of his restraints. Soon, Jill breaks free and along with Alice and their new ally Nemesis, take down their Umbrella captors. Carlos, Alice, Jill, Angela, and L.J. are the sole survivors and as they leave by way of helicopter out of the city, they are unable to escape the full force of a nuclear blast detonated to cover up the Raccoon City incident. The explosion causes the helicopter to crash in the nearby Arklay Mountains, and Alice is left for dead, only to be taken in by Umbrella for experimentation.

It is shown that during the three weeks after the incident, that Carlos is wanted by police because of his involvement in a video, shot by Terri Morales, that reveals what occurred in Raccoon City; the media claims it as a hoax after Umbrella uses their power to convince the media that a nuclear power plant had been the cause of the explosion. Three weeks later, Carlos and Jill pose as Umbrella agents, faking high level authorization, and rescue Alice from an Umbrella facility.

Resident Evil: Extinction
Set five years later, Carlos returns in Extinction, helping to lead Claire Redfield's convoy of survivors across the Nevada desert. Carlos and L.J. no longer have the aid of Alice or Jill Valentine (Jill does not appear in the film, however, she does in the novel). Carlos eventually reunites with Alice during a battle with zombie birds, where she uses her telekenetic powers to shield him, and a girl he in turn was shielding, from an arc of fire. After introducing Alice to Claire, Alice and Carlos talk and he asks her about her departure from the group in Detroit which is presumd to be where Alice left the team. They share a few moments together and even fall into an embrace that are captured by the Umbrella satellite that is overhead. Afterwards, Alice informs the group to find sanctuary in Alaska, to which Carlos agrees and persuades Claire to agree, as well.

During the last battle between the convoy and a group of zombies fused with Alice's blood, L.J. turns into a zombie and tried to bite K-Mart but Carlos intervenes and receives the bite instead. Believing that the anti-virus would not cure him, Carlos decides to sacrifice himself for the convoy, driving a large gasoline truck with dynamite into a hoards of zombies that block the way to transport out. Alice attempts to convince him to wait for the anti-virus, but he refuses. The remaining group members say their goodbye's and as he leaves, Carlos and Alice share a brief kiss.

Carlos goes to detonate the dynamite, allowing the other survivors to make their way through the clearing and to a helicopter for transport to Alaska leaving Alice, and the convoy, left in tears over his death. Carlos takes his death calmly as he smokes a cigarette hidden in the visor by L.J. in the overturned truck as hundreds of zombies swarm over him.

In Literature
In the novelization of Extinction, it bridges the events between Apocalypse and Extinction. After escaping Raccoon City, Carlos and Alice form a strike team and help people around the nation that are overwhelmed with the undead. In a fight while trying to save college students, Alice leaves mid-fight and Carlos pursues her to Detroit, trying to save her, but Alice instead persuades him to leave her and they separate. He soon meets and, it is implied, saves Claire Redfield, but is guilt ridden from losing his team in Raccoon City, some of the Strike Team members, Angela Ashford, and Alice. Therefore he gives leadership to Claire and plays a smaller leadership role in her convoy.

Also, it is revealed that shortly before Carlos sacrifices himself for the well-being of the convoy, he and Alice had laid on a ridge overlooking Dr. Isaacs haven. It is told that Carlos does have feelings for Alice and possibly loves her. However, he never understood love but adds that Alice was important to him, which was one of the reasons that he had pursued her to Detroit where it was the last time he had seen her.
