The Calumpang family is a prestigious clan of the Province of Oriental Negros particularly the City of Tanjay. According to legends, the family's great ancestor was a Spanish duke who was banished here in the Philippines for the very reason that he was part of the plot to overthrow King Ferdinand ??? & Queen Isabella ??? of the Great Spanish Empire.
The Calumpang's are music-minded people. They have contributed much to the shaping of Visayan and Negrense music. Their musical compositions have become famous throughout the neighboring islands of Negros. A couple of these are the songs Ang Budbod sa Tanjay and Ang Dalagang Tanjayanon. Both came from one single composer, Andrews Miraflor - Calumpang. The first song talks about the native delicacy of the then Town of Tanjay, the budbod. The budbod is an emblem that symbolizes every Tanjayanon. The second song, Ang Dalagang Tanjayanon is dedicated by the composer to his wife, Virginia "Viging" Teves - Calumpang. It talks of the grace, elegance and eloquence that every Tanjayanon woman possesses. It talks of the Tanjayanon woman's shyness and her being very reserved. It describes how every man must patiently wait for her (the Tanjayanon woman) to say that precious "yes". The Calumpang's also had an orchestra before, during the pre-war years named the Heart Blenders. They played in different parts of the Visayas and for as far as Cebu. The orchestra was composed of the late Bernardino Michael "Mike" M. Calumpang (also known as the walking dictionary), the late Alexander "Alex" M. Calumpang (married Nadina "Dina" C. Rotea, scion of a sugar-rich family), the late Mario "Nellie" M. Calumpang (a schoolteacher who served the city for almost three decades) and Andrews "Andy" M. Calumpang (a former professor at Foundation University & East Negros Institute).
In the political aspect, the Calumpang's has helped so much to the shaping of the primitive Tanjayanon government. Example to this was the late Don Agapito Calumpang who was the first Town Vice-Mayor. Even though the political power of the Calumpang's at present has declined, they still haven't lost their influence over politics in the city.
The Calumpang's are also known to love literature extensively. They helped in molding the earliest forms of literature in Tanjay. The late Don Andres "Tio Dodong" Calumpang y Limbaga (father to the Heart Blender group) was a playwright, a music composer and loved literature. He made plays and directed them at the same time.
In the society, the Calumpang's has been an epitome of leadership. This can be observed in the personalities of the late Rizalina "Saling" Calumpang who was the Miss Negros Oriental 1926 title holder and was sent to Manila for the Miss Philippines pageant, Wilfredo "Owa" Cañaveral - Calumpang who has organized very successful events in the city & Rodolfo "Braddock" Miraflor - Calumpang, one-time North America Bureau Chief of the Philippine Documentation Center and founder of the Tanjay Association, USA.
Today, the Calumpang family is a very diverse clan. They have intermarried different clans in the Province. A few are the Floreses, Miraflors, Limbagas and many more. The Calumpang's have multiplied and have scattered to different places around the world. They can be found in almost any corner of the globe. They have been stewards of goodwill representing the proud Tanjayanon race.
I am looking for relatives who can help me with a family tree. I am a descendent of the Calumpangs! I was born and raised in the US, but I have heard the story that we are related to royalty!
My grandmother is Soling Calumpang, and my Grandfather is Duk Albon. I am also related to the Miraflor's, and had brief contact with my aunt Carmen (Miraflor) who works at Stanford U.
Andrew, you must be a long lost cousin! I'm hoping that you and any other relatives find this, and send me a message.
Thanks! :)
