Bryan Gunn Appeal

Bryan Gunn, married to Susan, with two children Melissa and Angus, is one of the best-known footballers ever to play for Norwich City. After 477 appearances for the team, he is now the Goalkeeping Coach at Carrow Road.

Bryan Gunn’s Leukaemia Appeal was set up fourteen years ago after Francesca Gunn lost her life to leukaemia, at 2 years of age, in October 1992, and has raised almost £870,000 to date.

The Appeal is providing funding for a new ground-breaking research project to develop a new treatment in the battle against childhood leukaemia.

Although there is a much higher success rate today than in the past, still up to 50% of leukaemia victims are not cured.

This project, based entirely at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, is looking for a new treatment method, using modern technology to better target the diseased cells, and deliver medicine more effectively than ever before.

The research is being carried out in conjunction with the Francesca Gunn Laboratory at UEA, which was opened by Bryan and Susan Gunn in 1994 as a memorial to Francesca. Work on various projects has been going on in the laboratory for the past ten years, and local hospitals and children with leukaemia have also benefited from the Appeal.

Bryan Gunn’s Appeal Chairman Keith Colman said “We are so privileged to have a world-class research laboratory here in Norwich, and we are pleased to be able to support projects that contain so much promise. I hope that as people respond to this appeal, we can make a significant impact for the treatment of children with leukaemia all over the world.”

Bryan Gunn’s Appeal is also currently supporting research at the University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil, where research into medicinal plants from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest are being studied to see if they have an effect on leukaemia, with ‘significant’ results having been reported to date.

Another initiative of Bryan Gunn’s Appeal is a telephone support line, for parents and families of children with leukaemia and cancer.
