Brownism is the political philosophy of Gordon Brown, who is the leader of the Labour Party and successor to Tony Blair as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Proponents of Brownism are referred to as Brownites. Like Tony Blair (and Peter Mandelson), Brown was one of the principal architects of the "New Labour" ethos. New Labour values can be characterised as a belief in "rights and duties", a "stakeholder society" and the "Third Way". It is generally believed that few differences in political belief are evident between Blair and Brown. Both are generally perceived as being "centrist" and believers in social democracy. In United Kingdom politics, the term Brownite refers to a personal and/or political supporter of Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1997-2007 and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom thereafter and to date.
