Brian Timpone is the co-founder and CEO of Journatic, a hyperlocal content news provider. Timpone has been the subject of significant news coverage surrounding the Tribune Company’s replacement of some newsroom staff with hyperlocal newsgathering services provided by Journatic. Education and early experience Timpone attended Marian Catholic High School and the University of Missouri. He graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After college he worked for a CBS station in Minnesota and later worked as a reporter at the Illinois state capitol in Springfield, Illinois. Timpone also founded the website Blockshopper.com, which reports on home purchases in 15 metropolitan areas, in 2006 along with several business partners. Management of Journatic As of July 2012, Timpone had 60 full-time employees and 200 freelancers working for him at Journatic. According to the The Atlantic Wire, Journatic is expected to grow its output to 100,000 news stories per week. In 2012, Timpone secured a deal with the Chicago Tribune’s corporate owner, the Tribune Company, in which the Tribune Company invested in Journatic. Personal news coverage Brian Timpone has received significant news coverage in publications such as the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, National Public Radio, The Atlantic Wire and others. The majority of press coverage has been about either the role of Journatic’s news-gathering and writing tactics in modern media; or Journatic’s one-time mistake in using fake bylines in a handful of stories. Journatic apologized and promised not to repeat the mistake. In response to allegations that Journatic had hired low-paid workers in the Philippines, Timpone noted in an interview that the compensation was “more than most other places in the Philippines .”
