Brent Blake

Brent Blake is an American designer famous for his plans to build the world's larget lava lamp in his home town of Soap Lake, Washington. The original plans called for a sixty-five-foot tall lamp, identical in every way to its smaller cousins. Plans stalled, however, when he began to explore the cost and feasbility of such a structure. No glass blowing facility in the area was capable of making such a large conical bowl, and residents raised safety concerns after vandals struck area businesses. "If they put a giant lava lamp here", said the town's mayor, "it better be bulletproof."

Funding problems eventually sank plans to construct a full-sized lamp, but the town's hopes were revived in late 2004. The Target Corporation had heard about Blake's plans, and agreed to donate a mechanical lava lamp previous displayed as part of an advertisement in Times Square. The town agreed to host the faux lamp. Plans exist to deliver the lamp in spring 2007. The advertisement must be disassembled and shipped from New York City to Soap Lake, and a suitable location selected for the structure once it arrives.
